And The Rest Is History
The final effect in the film is where Superbman streaks into the sky from the desert floor and flies into outer space.
The desert shot was another 8x10 photograph used as the background plate upon which another photo of Superbman (Mark) was animated flying into the air.
In the next shot Superbman flys into view looking down on Earth from outer space.
Here again, I employed a double exposure. First I shot a static photo of the Earth (cut out of a magazine) at the bottom of the frame. Then I filmed Superbman (Mark), laying on his back, in a blacked out set. Filming with camera turned upside down, I dollied - from head to toe - over and past him. When superimposed with the first Earth image it gave the impression he was flying above us into view.
He goes into warp via more animation and light effects and as our narrator says, “The rest is history, history, history.”
